In honor of Be Kind To Animals Week I thought I would share some of my favorite resources for dog education. Educate kids about dogs and the importance of safety. Include lesson plans about animals at home and in the classroom. Teach kids about: what it takes to care for animals, how to greet a strange dog, what to do if you see a lost dog, and how to prevent a bite. For great ideas for lesson plans visit: the National Pet Week Website at http://www.petweek.org/lessons.html, for a bite prevention presenter visit http://www.be-a-tree.com/ or invite a local animal enthusiast, such as a shelter manager, veterinarian, or dog trainer to the home or classroom . My favorite resource is the American Kennel Club. They offer lesson plan ideas and activity sheets on their website at http://www.apps.akc.org/apps/kids_juniors/. Check out their activity book ‘The Dog Listener’.
