Counter Surfing, or stealing food from counters, is a very common dog behavior. The most realistic solution to counter surfing is to use a combination of management and training techniques to make it easy for your dog to avoid temptation. Teach your dog a good ‘Stay’ cue, and a good ‘Leave it’ cue. Another cue I like to teach to counter surfers is ‘off’…teach them to take their front paws off of the counter.
